Whilst the debate rages, some of us think about the future in terms of the Kardashev scale:

Type I Civilization: Can use and store all energy available on its planet. This is called a planetary civilization.
Type II Civilization: Can use and store all energy at the scale of its planetary system. This is also called a stellar civilization.
Type III Civilization: Can control energy at the scale of its entire host galaxy. This is also called a galactical civilization.
Meaning that we are a Type 0 civilisation!

One day, we will claw our way up to Type I – just wait and see.
