Were you following a weekly list of forthcoming astronaut* birthdays?

Did you share a birthday?!

If not, perhaps it will be you who adds your name to the list?! Or maybe, one of the 100+ additional astronauts has beaten you?! These astronauts have flown since this original list was pulled together.

We have started listing all the newer astronauts, but not in birthday order. We are now using date order. It starts with 22 July 2015 – see Do you share a birthday with an astronaut? (no.54) – and comes up to date with the most recent astronauts. This is based on the details published by supercluster.com.

If you do share a birthday, what does it mean to you?

Do you feel a connection, pride? They take to the skies (on controlled explosions) to improve the world, to explore (to travel to strange new worlds).

As space travel to near earth orbit becomes cheaper and the world becomes richer there will be a wide-range of atypical astronauts (ie not test pilot, or from the military, or the hard science types of the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s). Aside from space tourists, see Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic, its actors and film directors making the big step, out of the cradle and into micro gravity.

Keep watching the skies and consider – could you (or your children) be a future space traveller? Probably! How exciting!!

The Challenge (Russian: Вызов, romanized: Vyzov) is a 2023 Russian space drama film co-written and directed by Klim Shipenko. Filmed on the International Space Station (ISS), it is the first feature-length film featuring actors to be shot in space. The film stars Yulia Peresild as a surgeon sent to space to help an injured cosmonaut. The cast also includes Miloš Biković and Vladimir Mashkov. The film crew was accompanied by cosmonauts Anton Shkaplerov, Oleg Novitsky, and Pyotr Dubrov, and NASA astronaut Mark T. Vande Hei.
