– Gerry Goffin, Carole King
The great song writing duo Goffin and King with Up on the Roof, first recorded by Little Eva, the Drifters and many others.
Do the lyrics “evinces a quiet sense of sadness, an urban dissatisfaction that moves beyond anything conceived by the rose-spectacled Tin Pan Alley writers of the early 20th century“? Or maybe, “this breezy summertime song evokes the high-rise apartments in American cities where urban dwellers could escape from the stresses of daily living by climbing onto the tar “beaches” on the roofs of their buildings“?
For me the lyrics encourage pure escapism – that chance to do nothing (maybe with a little drinky or two) but to gaze upon the stars and imagine … the future of humanity, what’s out there, to ponder your place in the Cosmos. Or just turn your mind off for a few minutes – especially if this is playing in the background:
Personally, I prefer the Neil Diamond version:

PS: I love coffee. BuyMeACoffee, leave a message with a date and time and we can share it, remotely, at the same time, and think about the Cosmos.
In the meantime, take care of yourself and if you can, someone else, too, because as Adam Smith said, “we naturally desire not only to be loved but to be lovely”.
