— Isaac Asimov (2 Jan 1920 – 6 Apr 1992)
American author (of Russian parentage) and professor of biochemistry at Boston University who was a prolific author and editor of science fiction and non-fiction.
He was a regular commentator on science and society and atheism and developed the three laws of robotics.
Asimov was also a composer of limericks, of varying quality!
His poem is a rewrite of a song titled “Tell me why” which puts God as the reason for the stars shining, etc. – the lyrics go:
Tell me why the stars do shine,
Tell me why the ivy twines,
Tell me why the skies are blue,
And I will tell you just why I love you.Because God made the stars to shine,
Because God made the ivy twine,
Because God made the skies so blue,
Because God made you, that’s why I love you.I really think that God above
Created you for me to love.
God picked you out from all the rest,
Because God knew I’d love you the best.
Typical of Asimov – he put a scientific spin on a subject and his version goes:
Nuclear fusion makes stars to shine,
Tropisms make the ivy twine,
Raleigh scattering make skies so blue,
Testicular hormones are why I love you.
PS: I love coffee. BuyMeACoffee, leave a message with a date and time and we can share it, remotely, at the same time, and think about the Cosmos.
In the meantime, take care of yourself and if you can, someone else, too, because as Adam Smith said, “we naturally desire not only to be loved but to be lovely”.
